Pittsburgh Engineering Schools & Programs Allowing for students to customize their curriculum and allowing for engineering studies within the first semester are among the draws of Carnegie Mellon University, one of the nation’s most prestigious engineering schools. Nine engineering disciplines are offered, with each department offering opportunities to conduct research with faculty members. With nationally ranked undergraduate and graduate programs, University of Pittsburgh offers the full slate of education, with seven major departments of engineering along with six interdisciplinary areas. A strong relationship with the school’s medical school resulted in establishing bioengineering programs. Though a few hours from downtown Pittsburgh, Penn State University impresses with its sheer size, totaling more than 7,200 students and offering 28 academic or certificate programs. That massive population fuels an active student body that has more than 50 organizations, providing an outlet for undergraduate and graduate programs that rank in the top 20 nationally.

Already home to more than 11,000 engineering jobs, the Pittsburgh area is expected to have 3.8 percent job growth in the field of engineering jobs by 2010, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry The ‘hot’ Pittsburgh engineering job growth is projected to be for computer software engineers, with a 41.1 percent increase; environmental engineers with 27.6 percent growth; and biomedical engineers jobs up 23.1 percent. However, the fields of chemical and nuclear engineering are each expected to experience double-digit job reductions by 2010.
